Growing up I loved eating the famous Jello Pudding Pops. These homemade pudding pops are awesome and taste just like the real thing.

These are so refreshing and full of nice chocolate pudding flavor. They are perfect for a hot summer day or anytime of the year you want a cold yummy treat.

And homemade pudding pops are super duper easy to make. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather the ingredients

Homemade Pudding Pops Recipe | In The Kitchen With Matt (2)

In order to make homemade pudding pops you need just a few ingredients:

  • Chocolate pudding mix – Or you can make homemade chocolate pudding.
  • Milk – I generally use whole milk, but any cold milk will work.
  • Cool whip – The cool whip will give it body and help with the structure. You will probably need to set it out so it is soft. Or you can use whipped cream.

Tools

Step 2: How to make chocolate homemade pudding pops

Homemade Pudding Pops Recipe | In The Kitchen With Matt (3)

Begin by adding your instant chocolate pudding mix to a medium bowl of milk. Use a whisk and combine them. There are all kinds of instant pudding mix flavors as well, so if you wanted to make a different flavor than chocolate, you totally can!

Or if you are going to use homemade pudding use the ingredients to make that and not the milk and instant pudding mix from this recipe. Because milk is used to make the homemade pudding. After the pudding has chilled move on from there with the recipe.

Next, whisk in the softened cool whip, or you can use whipped cream as well. Why are we adding this? Why can’t we just freeze pudding?

Well technically you can, but the cool whip or whipped cream gives it a better texture and allows it to freeze better. The end product will not only be tastier but it will also be closer to the real thing.

And just like that the homemade pudding pops batter/mixture is ready to go. Easy right?

Step 3: Fill up the popsicle molds

And now the only thing left to do is to fill up the popsicle molds. Or if you like you can use Dixie cups with wooden popsicle sticks.

The easiest way to fill up the molds is with a piping bag, but you can also just use a spoon and scoop it in as well. Leave about a 1/4th of an inch from the top, because it will expand a bit when it freezes.

Step 4: Freeze those homemade pudding pops

Now all you need to do is place them in the freezer for four hours or up to overnight. Then when you want to eat them, run some warm water over the mold which will help to release the pudding pop. Enjoy!

How long will pudding pops last?

You can keep them in the freezer for a few months.

Equipment

  • Popsicle mold or small cups

  • Bowls

  • Spoon or piping bag

  • Whisk

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of cold milk I use whole milk or any kind (500ml)
  • 1 package of Jello Pudding Instant Mix 3.9 oz (110g)
  • 1 cup cool whip room temp (240g)
  • Or use ingredients for a homemade chocolate pudding

Instructions

  • Combine the instant chocolate pudding mix (or any flavor) with the milk and whisk until well combined.

Or make a homemade chocolate pudding using the ingredients for that. If making homemade, make sure to chill the pudding first before the next step.

  • Fold or mix in the softened cool whip or whipped cream with the bowl of pudding. No need to wait for the instant pudding to set first. This will affect the texture and help it freeze better.

  • Now fill up the popsicle molds using a piping bag or a ladle or spoon. The piping bag works easier, however.

  • Freeze the pudding pops for 4 to 6 hours or overnight. Run warm water over the mold to loosen it, then enjoy it! Easy as that.

I haven’t made this yet. Wondering how to make it with a large box of instant pudding mix? I only have a 5.9 oz box. Thanks for the share!.

Hi! Just use 1 cup less of milk, and make the pudding, then fold in the whipped cream or cool whip. 🙂 So essentially you are just replacing 1 cup of milk with 1 cup of cool whip, after the pudding is made.

It is necessary to use coolwhip/whip topping? Would it work the same with just pudding mix/milk?

Hi! Yes, it is necessary to use the cool whip/whipped topping. It won’t have the right consistency if you just use the pudding by itself. 🙂

Will this recipe work with sugar free instant pudding? What about with almond milk. Thinking of visitors with kids.

FAQs

Why did they stop making pudding pops? ›

Despite strong sales into the 1990s, Pudding Pops were eventually discontinued due to no longer being profitable.

Why doesn't pudding thicken with almond milk? ›

Regular instant pudding usually won't set with almond milk because the pudding mix is formulated to work with the specific proteins in cow's milk. If you want to try to fix it, you can try dissolving a little bit of cornstarch in water and adding that in.

What is a substitute for instant pudding mix? ›

The alternative mix is simply 1 part cornstarch to 2 parts fine sugar, plus 1 part vanilla. I used 1 TBSP. of cornstarch and 2 TBSP. of sugar.

Does anyone make pudding pops anymore? ›

Yes, sadly, they're now extinct, but if you're despairing that you'll never have the chance to enjoy this treat again, fear not. There is an officially sanctioned recipe online that you can use to recreate the experience. All you need to do is combine instant pudding mix and milk and freeze in a popsicle mold.

How to make pudding pops without mold? ›

Paper or Plastic Cups

Small (or large, if you want to go for massive pops) disposable paper or plastic cups are an easy and inexpensive stand-in for popsicle molds. And some recipes actually work even better with cups than with molds.

What happens if you use water instead of milk for pudding? ›

Both chocolate and vanilla instant pudding worked with just water. I recommend halving the required water, and it definitely does not taste as good as milk pudding.

Can you use heavy whipping cream in pudding? ›

You can make the whipped pudding thicker or thinner depending on how much heavy whipping cream you add. If you are looking for a thicker consistency (to eat with a spoon, or use as a cake filling), add a little less heavy cream. If you want to use it as a donut filling, use a little more, so that it's easily pipeable.

How do you fix runny pudding? ›

Thicken runny pudding with gelatin

Eggs or cornstarch will both help to thicken things up, but you do have other options. If vegan options aren't a concern for you, gelatin is a great way to fix a pudding that is a little too soupy for your liking.

Does homemade pudding thicken as it cools? ›

It will coat the back of the spoon; test it by running your finger down the spoon. You should wipe a clear, clean line through the custard. Remove from heat. The pudding will thicken more as it cools.

What are most homemade puddings thickened with? ›

Most recipes use a starch thickener -- typically flour or cornstarch in the United States -- to bring the pudding to a suitable consistency.

Does Cool Whip thicken pudding? ›

I used to make my banana pudding with homemade whipped cream because I do prefer to use from-scratch whole food ingredients. However, I found that when you use the cool whip it helps to stabilize the rest of the ingredients and results in a thicker pudding.

Can I use evaporated milk instead of milk for instant pudding? ›

Use in equal amounts as a lower fat substitute for light cream, heavy cream or half and half. Substitute for regular milk in instant pudding mixes, macaroni and cheese, boxed potatoes and condensed soups for more homemade flavor. Use evaporated milk as a creamer for coffee.

Is homemade pudding better than instant? ›

TASTE AND TEXTURE:

The taste of the cooked pudding is much richer and more complex than the instant. It's got a structure to the texture that isn't limp or watery. It feels as though a much more substantial transformation has occurred in the cooked pudding than in the instant. It's thick and slightly lumpy.

Why add instant pudding to cake mix? ›

Add Instant Pudding

For example, use chocolate pudding for a chocolate cake mix. Then, add the wet ingredients and bake the cake as directed. It'll be so moist and the pudding will give it a big flavor boost.

Do they make Jell-O Pudding Pops anymore? ›

While Jell-O brand Pudding Pops are no longer being sold, Jell-O didn't completely leave us in a lurch.

Is frozen pudding a thing? ›

Layered Pudding Freeze is a creamy, frosty, no-bake dessert that's easy to pull together using just a few ingredients like instant pudding, Cool Whip and fruit. Since it needs time in the freezer before serving, the recipe is a great make-ahead dessert. Find out which state eats the most Jell-O—and other Jell-O facts!

When did snack pack pudding cups come out? ›

Snack Packs were introduced in 1968 in single-serve aluminum/metal cans, before switching to plastic cups in 1984 and clear plastic cups in 1990. They are marketed as healthy treats for children, with its calcium content often being emphasized.
