Synopsis

Bertram Oliphant 'Bo' West wants to clear his unjustly smeared reputation, so he joins the Foreign Legion—with Simpson his manservant in tow. But the fort they get posted to is full of eccentric legionnaires, and there's trouble brewing with the locals too. Unbeknown to Bo, his lady love has followed him in disguise.

Carry On Follow That Camel is one of the weakest entries from the so called "golden age" of the franchise. It also happens to be one of my least favourite entries. This has always been a film that I wished was better than it actually is. The setting and the scenario are classic Carry On. However, the script is really weak with several bland characters and jokes that range between unfunny and uncomfortable. There are a few good moments, but they are few and far between. I also find Phil Silvers to be too annoying in this film and his style of comedy just doesn't work here. There is too much of a clash in terms of humour for it…

"What an odd way to check my porthole!"

AKA Carry On Follow That Camel

English gent Bo West (Jim Dale) is falsely accused of cheating at cricket,, causing the girl of his dreams Jane (Angela Douglas) to turn her back on him. In disgrace he and his manservant Simpson (Peter Butterworth) enlist in the French Foreign Legion. In charge of Fort Soixante-Neuf (shakes head and groans) is monocled Commandant Burger (Kenneth Williams) and the roguish Sergeant Nocker (Phil Silvers). Jane, discovering Bo's innocence, travels to find him but soon ends up in the clutches of the Arab wrongun Sheikh Abdul Abulbul (Bernard Bresslaw)....before long Bo and Nocker also end up captured by the sheikh. The duo plot their escape.....
    Effectively…

The Carry On gang spoof sand-covered camel-epics, minus Sid James but now with more added Phil Silvers.

It's not their best, it's not their worst, it's pretty middle of the road. Silvers doesn't completely feel out of place, but he's no funnier than the regular gang.

It looks and feels like the desert, hard to believe it was filmed in the English countryside. They got pretty creative trying to save money.

One of only two Carry On movies to not have "Carry On" in the title. The gang switched studios and there was a brief period when they were unsure if they could...carry on.

One of the better Carry On efforts with good performances from the series regulars and the nice addition of Phil Silvers.

Ich habe mir den ganzen Film vorgestellt mit Sid James in der Phil Silvers Rolle.

Bei Phil Silvers muss ich immer an Otto Mayer denken und wie sein Auto langsam im Fluss versinkt.

  • Review by Sophie Farrell ★★

Carry On Follow That Camel is one of the weakest Carry On films from the franchise's golden period and one of my least favourite entries. This is a film that I wish was better than it actually is. This is down to the setting and scenario being so classically Carry On. However, the script is rather weak with bland characters and many unfunny and, at times, uncomfortable jokes. I also find Phil Silvers really annoying in this film and his character just isn't funny at all. His style of comedy just doesn't work within the confines of a Carry On film. The rest of the cast give good performances but are let down by the weak script which doesn't give…

  • Review by GoodBadAndOdd ★★★½

Charming effort from the Carry On team, this time supplanting Sid Jamres for Phil Silvers, with some success. At the slightly smutty end of the Carry On scale (but only just), it cracks along at a fair pace, recycling some of the gags from Abbott And Costello in the Foreign Legion (especially the old see an oasis that isn't there joke) and with a nice zippy zest.

I think Bernard Bresslaw as the chief of the Arab tribe was standout, a magnificent pantomime turn, but the whole cast had good energy.

  • Review by IanPhillips1979 ★★★

Visually very good and, as often the case, looks a far more expensive production than it actually was. The low budget was stretched for American comedian and TV star Phil Silvers who pocketed far more than the actual regulars ever did. With an eye on the US market, he was drafted in as a big special guest star, replacing an unavailable Sid James. He does his best in his one and only Carry On but his style did seem somewhat Ill-at-ease with the other cast. Again, the film has a scattering of funny moments but overall this one seems to lack something. Definitely worth a watch though.

  • Review by Solid Gold ★★★

You can’t watch and rate Carry On films in the same way you view ‘proper’ films... they’re a law unto themselves.

They inhabit a ridiculous English reality where objectification of women, mockery of foreigners and innuendo are merely a silly eccentricity rather than a sign of dangerously hateful attitudes.

In this example, Kenneth Williams’s inexplicably German leader of the French foreign legion is cartoon-esque with his “schwein hund!” insults.
Jim Dale’s Bo demonstrates the nincompoopery that made the British such charming twits.

“I say sir, do you think we’re too late?”

Phil Silvers in the role of Sgt Nocker (stepping in successfully for Sid James who would still have done a fab job) adds a different twist to the standard…

"Ist ja irre - In der Wüste fließt kein Wasser!" ist nach "Agenten auf dem Pulverfass" ein bisheriger Höhepunkt der Reihe. In dem Carry-on-Film mit der längsten Drehzeit werden Legionärs- und Söldnerfilme mit beinahe pythoneskem britischen Humor parodiert, was nach dem klamaukig-tristen Krankenhausvorgänger gehörig überrascht.
